Why I chose this topic:
I chose this topic because when I was in the 4th grade, each person in the class had to choose a topic within the Civil War and create a finished product for it. Two friends and I chose the Emancipation Proclamation. I found out a lot of information about the impact it had and the struggles that African-Americans went through and I was immediately interested in learning more about this topic; all the way from 4th grade to 6th grade.
How I conducted my research:
First, I started by searching Emancipation Proclamation on the internet and a multitude of results came up. I then turned to my teacher, who helped me find a history website and a new primary source. I took notes and analyzed then to my understanding (I continued this process throughout the rest of my sources.) Next, I checked out a couple of books from my social studies classroom. I had plenty of sources, so I finally listed them for my annotated bibliography. This process helped me identify for the information I would include on my website.
How I created and developed my website:
Creating and developing my website was an interesting experience for me. For the background, I chose a template of old paper and a pen, since the Emancipation Proclamation was a written document. I also found pictures from the internet and books to add to the appearance of my site. Next, I had to decide what pages I would include for my website. I needed to know the key factors; I knew I’d need a course of events and information on people include in the making of the Emancipation Proclamation. I then looked through and analyzed the Emancipation Proclamation. I made a timeline of events for my topic, and added it to a page. I then used my analysis and regular notes to add the information to my pages. I also created a supplemental tab to show my process and sources to the public. I had the opportunity to talk with a judge at my school history night to get feedback on my progress.
How my project relates to the theme:
My topic relates to the theme in different ways. For one, it freed 3.1of the 4 million slaves held captive. That seems like it is really changing to me. It also took a lot of decision, too. Lincoln’s country was at war and divided. He wanted them to stay together, while many others did not. He had to do something. I find it that if Lincoln did not take initiative, our country would not be equal, and we would also be unsuccessful.
